Investigating fragments has been central to my work for many years.
Referred to as 'Fragmentals' the inquiry looks at objects or subjects in
isolation and in combination. Only part of the original may be used. For
example, a cylindrical form is cut then reconfigured into an unexpected
order isolating it from similar objects or having been cut only part of
the original form is presented. 'Fragmentals' are not bound by geometry,
rather the freedom to think of objects as the raw material for formal
and conceptual exploration, reconfiguration and reassembly. We all
experience fragmentation to varying degrees in contemporary living. What
do we make of it and how does it emerge in the artists work?

Stephen Hogbin was born in Tolworth, England in 1942 and currently
resides at Lake Charles, Ontario.
He studied design at the Royal College of Art in England and emigrated to Canada in 1968 to instruct at Sheridan College. In 1970 he opened his studio to work as a studio maker and over many years investigated fragmentation. Stephen has worked as a community artist curating several exhibitions for the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery some of which traveled to more than one location.
He has authored two books, Wood Turning: the purpose of the object, John
Ferguson Pty Ltd, Australia; Appearance and Reality: A visual Handbook
for Artists Designers and Makers, Cambium Press, USA.
