Biographical Notes
1928 Born, Hartlepool, County Durham, England.
1935 Watched a display of Aurora-Borealis: luminous streamers
on the northern
horizon.
At Hartlepool
Headland: father and I introduced to the British dramatist
George Bernard Shaw.
1938 Visited the Empire Exhibition at Bellahoyston Park, Glasgow,
to see the
spectacular modern architecture.
1939 Second World War.
1941 Coventry Mediaeval City and Cathedral obliterated by
German Luftwaffer:
visiting relatives there at the time.
1942 Recruited as Civil Defence Messenger: Hartlepool.
1943 Hartlepool College of Art.
1946 Ambleside, Lake District: meeting with Kurt Schwitters.
1947-49 Military National Service.
1950-54 Royal Academy Schools: London. England. Married Muriel
Ross, 1954,
Edinburgh, Scotland.
1955 Elected member N.E.A.C. (New English Art Club).
1956 David Lewis, first lecture: Leeds City Art Caller, Lecturer,
Leeds College
of Art.
1963-69 Head of Fine Art Department, Leeds College of Art,
Yorkshire.
1969 Moved to Canada.
1970 Chairman, Fine Art: Fanshawe College, London, Ontario.
1972-82 Dean, Faculty of Applied Arts, Fanshawe College.
1973 American Endowment for the Arts, visiting professor, University
of Texas:
Judge, San Antonio Biennale Exhibition; visited Mexico.
1978 Elected Member Royal Canadian Academy.
1982-94 Professor, Fine Art Department, Fanshawe College.
