Gerard Brender a Brandis

Gerard
Brender a Brandis was born in the Netherlands to a faimly with
its origins in medieval Switzerland. He came to Canada with his
family in 1947, and lived in British Columbia and Nova Scotia
before settling in Ontario. After completing his B.A. in Fine
Arts History at McMaster University in 1965 he set out to establish
a career in blockprinting and bookmaking. His first edition of
handmade books appeared in 1969 and another has been issued almost
each year since then. His books have been included in the collections
of The National Library, Ottawa, the New York Pulic Libray, The
National Library of New Zealand, and many public and university
libraries, as well as private collections. His single-leaf engravings
are in The National Gallery, Ottawa, The Royal Botanical Gardens,
Hamilton, The Hunt Botanical Library, Pittsburgh, and in private
collections in Canada, The United States, Europe, Britain and
Japan. He now lives and works in Stratford, Ontario.
