ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I got my start as a photographer some forty years
ago. Since then, I have been learning how to use the camera and
how to see and develop my personal vision. Photography is one
medium to express what I feel.
In my other profession I am an exploration geologist, which provides
ample opportunity to travel to remote locations all over the world.
As a trained observer, I use my powers of observation and the
medium of photography to amplify my artistic vision. I am confronted
by the natural world and the landscape every day and use a variety
of techniques to capture and abstract my surroundings. Over time
my photographs have become increasingly simple and more abstract.
I have had several hundred photos published, and have held exhibitions
of my work. Also, I have written a regular review column in Camera
Canada for a number of years. Currently I am engaged in editorial
work and I am working with my partner, Laura Carter on a book
of Georgian Bay scenery which we plan to publish.
* Ulrich also collaborates with his partner - artist Laura J. Carter - combining her art and his photography in what they call - Canadian Mosaic Series as Photo Collage.
