Derek McLarty

Derek's current series of artworks grow out of his interest in meteorology and also reflect his environmental concerns. The Bruce Peninsula is a place that is set apart geographically and in some ways is protected from the growing urbanization of Southern Ontario. It is a place to escape the cities and to appreciate the natural world. Unfortunately it, and all parts of the planet, are being altered by human activity. Perhaps the greatest agent of human change is global warming. No place on earth is exempt from its touch. These works of Derek are, then, a subtle exploration of the changes which are evident in the air and landscape of the Bruce Peninsula. The pieces are both beautiful and, to a degree, threatening.

Biography

Derek McLarty was raised in London, Ontario where he developed an early interest in all forms of visual art. He studied painting, drawing, printmaking as well as art history at the University of Western Ontario before graduating with a Honours Visual Arts degree. Upon graduation, he quickly discovered that his full time work, while rewarding, left very little time for personal artistic expression. Since 2003, Derek has taken steps to balance employment with artistic practice. As a result, he now exhibits his works in both public and private galleries across southern Ontario. His works reside in both private and corporate collections across Canada.
