ARTIST’S STATEMENT
By taking a deeply introspective approach to landscape photography, I am able to find hidden beauty within my subject matter. I am often guided by an emotional response to material that projects visual power, strong form and energy. These feelings extend beyond the thing being photographed and can be conveyed by pattern, repetition, texture or unique forms and shapes. Proper attention to the balancing of these features within the composition can reveal the landscape behind the landscape.
My images rarely conform to the traditionally favoured conventions of landscape photography, tending towards non-representation, minimalism and ambiguity of scale. I frequently use natural pattern and strong graphic elements to lead the eye through the image, though, contrary to the norm, not necessarily to some centre of interest. Patterns and forms themselves are often the subject and become the image. My work blurs the definition of what exactly a landscape is.
My introspective approach to landscape photography and the filtering of visual subject material through the nuances of my aesthetic, result in image interpretations that, though not always recognizable, are none-the-less straightforward and realistic.
