Artist's Statement
My work focuses on the complex play of direct
and reflected light on stone and water.
I work in watercolour and oil to provide the intensity, clarity
and contrast that create the impact of each picture. Central to
my technique is the layering of many contrasting colours to capture
the transparent lensing effect of water.
Dancing and rushing chaotic movement is anchored by fixed detail
and smooth flowing water for dramatic contrast. Above all, I consciously
employ complexity of line, colour and composition to engage the
eye, the intellect and the emotions.
The result is a finely observed realism that paradoxically approaches
abstraction in its details: I call the result abstract realism.
