Maurice
Stubbs grew up on the West Australian coast. The sea, together
with the expansive skies, were a pervasive influence. The light
was intense, the weather, subject to extremes. Colours were strong,
vibrant and rich. All these influences were strongly felt and
are still present in his art today. The Great Lakes and the rocky
shores of the Bruce Peninsula are subject to similar dramatic
extremes of climate. This has had a strong appeal, especially
the intensity of the light and its influence on the colour and
forms of the landscape. For the most part his paintings are about
the nature of nature and how to capture the dynamic impact of
the simplest forms in the landscape. Not only to convey the intensity
of his own experiences, but to allow the viewer space to add their
own.
His work is represented in many public and private collections
in Canada, the U.S.A., Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He was
formerly an Associate Curator at the National Gallery of Canada
and Director of the McIntosh Gallery at the University of Western
Ontario. He lives and works in London, Ontario.
